September

In the September meeting, the emergence of Interactive Theatre Carolina (ITC) has a resource to help the spread awareness of some of the many issues that are present in the Chapel Hill Carrboro community and throughout the world. Also, Roger’s Road was established as a probable focal point of the committee. Roger’s Road is a predominately black area where all the trash from Chapel Hill gets sent. This is a prime example of economic, racial, and social injustice. As a committee, we intend to educate the community on this issue, trough methods like documentaries and looking to partner with other networks and partners throughout the community. Other topics included promoting justice awareness in the school systems, torture rights, and promoting voter turnout.

October

At the October meeting, there were several new member applicants and more are encouraged to apply as the committee continues to look to expand its network and capacity. We also revisited the ITC and have looked to make more use of this committee and have looked into getting more involved with the ITC. We also discussed the Journey of Reconciliation, which serves as the official marker about the Freedom Writers that occurred in Chapel Hill. Here, we are looking to play a supportive role and get involved in helping carry out this commemoration ceremony that will occur on April 13th, 2009. In the short tem, the committee looks to help in the upcoming Human Rights Week in December. The committee is also looking to formulate a more elaborate and detailed committee restructuring to improve its efforts as a cohesive unit.

Justice in Action Committee: November
In this meeting we discussed the upcoming Justice in Action Committee event that will take place on November 11, 2008 at the Council Chambers Town Hall in the downstairs area. The Justice in Action Committee has teamed with Interactive Theatre Carolina and will be putting on the ‘Be Rea$sonable’: An Interactive Theatre Performance about differences in socio-economic class in Chapel Hill. We discussed ways we’d be reaching to the community to generate publicity for the event. Then, another one of our upcoming primary objectives is the Human Rights Week and our involvement with that as a committee.
